Having a clean air filter on your motorcycle is one of the most important factors in having a well-running motor. The process of cleaning an air filter requires only basic tools and can be completed by nearly anyone. It is usually recommended that you do this at least every 10 hours of ride time for your motorcycle to maintain peak performance.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Standard socket wrench set
  • Bucket of hot, soapy water
  • Garden hose & tap
  • Air filter oil
  1. Step 1

Pull the motorcycle to an open, accessible location, and prop it on a stand or lean it against a sturdy object.

  2. Step 2

Use a socket wrench to remove the motorcycle's seat securing bolts. Then, slide the seat off.

  3. Step 3

Pull the top off the air filter box, and loosen and remove the wing nut securing the air filter within the box. Then, pull the air filter assembly out of the box.

  4. Step 4

Pull the air filter framing out of the filter and set it aside.

  5. Step 5

Dunk the filter in a bucket of hot, soapy water. Scrub and wring the filter until it is cleaned thoroughly.

  6. Step 6

Rinse the air filter out using a garden hose connected to clean tap water. Once you are sure that all the soap has been washed out, ring the filter out and get as much water out of it as possible. Then, set the filter out to dry for about an hour before continuing.

  7. Step 7

Drizzle air filter oil over the filter. Then, twist and wring the filter, working the oil into the foam.

  8. Step 8

Slide the air filter framing back into the filter. Then, slide the filter assembly back into its box on the motorcycle. Secure it using the locking wing-nut.

  9. Step 9

Slide the seat back onto the motorcycle, and replace the seat securing bolts once again using a socket wrench.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use plenty of filter oil on the air filter. This oil is what makes the filter effective and allows it to catch dust and other contaminants before they are sucked into the motor.
  • Always stay aware of pinch points when working around movable motorcycle parts.
