How to Minimize Cat Shedding

Cats are great pets that don't need as much attention as dogs. While they do clean themselves regularly, you will find that they shed their hair an awful lot. The hair and dander are a pain to constantly clean up, and they can cause problems for anyone in the home that suffers from allergies. You won't be able to stop your cat from losing its hair, but there are some things you can do to minimize its hair loss.

Things You'll Need

  • De-shedding tool
  • Cat brush
  • Shed Terminator for Cats capsules
  • Shed reducer spray

Instructions

Purchase a de-shedding tool. This tool will get rid of a lot of the hair your cat is about to shed or has already shed. It has metal teeth and works with the fur near the skin. Start at the cat's head and work your way down toward your cat's tail. Then get its sides and underbelly. Use this tool once per week.

Use a cat brush to get the top coat of your cat's fur free of any loose hair. You should use the cat brush on your cat daily. If your cat doesn't like the brush at first, don't worry. The cat will get use to the brush after awhile, and then even enjoy its grooming time. Daily brushings will keep your cat's hair healthy and minimize the amount of hair that it sheds.

Sprinkle two capsules of Shed Terminator for Cats in your cat's food. Give this to your cat once per day for one month. After that you can begin giving your cat one capsule per day. This formula works to reduce the amount of hair your cat sheds.

    • 4

Spray a shed reducer in your hand. Then rub it on the cat's fur by going against the direction the fur is growing. You can do this instead of giving your cat the capsules. Just apply it once per day for three weeks and then twice a week after that. Miracle Coat Shed Reducer is a respectable brand you may want to consider using.

Make sure you are feeding your cat a healthy diet. A healthy diet will keep your cat's fur from shedding any more than it needs to. Science Diet makes a well-balanced cat food, if you aren't sure whether your cat is eating properly or not.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adopt a short-haired cat if cat hair really bothers you. Short-haired cats shed less often and not as much.

  • Skip bathing your cat. Cats don't like it and it can lead them to shed more often. They clean themselves so it really isn't necessary.

Look for foods that list foods your cat would naturally eat (chicken meal, fish meal, duck meal, etc…). These foods are the actual meat of the animal that has been cook and then dehydrated for the dry food, not the left over scraps. Corn is not a part of your cat’s natural diet, and if it is on the label, it is there as a filler and will only make your cat fat after a period of time. As a good rule of thumb, if there are more ingredients on the label you don’t understand and can’t pronounce, it probably isn’t the best choice for your feline friend.

10 ingredients on the label.) 8. Choline Chloride, a chemical commonly used in chicken feed to accelerate the chicken’s growth. Due to the mass amounts used in the chickens to create the chicken by-product, this chemical is also passed in to the food of your cat. 9. Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, chemical variation of the vitamin B6. In high doses it can cause damage to sensory nerves and may lead to numbness, confusion, poor coordination and rise in temperature. 10. Glyceryl Monostearate, thickening and preserving agent. Commonly used in hair care and cosmetic products.

not developed to digest large amounts of corn. 4. Powdered Cellulose, a chemical compound used to make paper and cardboard. It is referred to as dietary fiber, and used in this case to harden your cat's stools. There are more natural ways of ensuring this occurs without the use of industrial chemicals. 5. Soybean Oil, oil high in trans-fat and sold primarily abroad as vegetable oil. The undesirable husks left over from the production of soybean oil are normally used for animal feed as they are unfit for human consumption. 6. Calcium Sulfate, an industrial chemical used in dry food to aid in the dehydration of the food. It is most commonly found in plaster and drywall. 7. Potassium Chloride, industrial chemical most commonly used in fertilizer. Other uses include judicially ordered lethal injections and second and third trimester abortions. This was an informative article up to the point of needlessly advertising a specific brand of food that is actually riddled with chemicals and by-products that are not at all healthy for your cats. A few examples of what can be found in your cat's food; Science Diet Indoor Dry Cat Food Ingredients: 1. Chicken By-Products, these are the left over chicken parts which include, but are not limited to, feet, bone, feathers, undeveloped eggs, etc, and other parts of the chicken that are not considered to be digestible muscle tissue. 2. Corn Gluten Meal, non-toxic filler in animal food that is also used as an herbicide. Feeding your cat corn product does nothing for your cat's health and causes them to gain unwanted extra weight. In some cases, it can even cause feline obesity. 3. Ground Whole Grain Corn, another filler that can cause feline obesity. Your cat is a carnivore an...
