How to Convert AVI Files to Mpeg4 Files

AVI files are very high-quality digital video files that can be captured in many programs, including Windows Movie Maker and Adobe Premiere. Uncompressed AVIs are extremely large files, using up to 13 GB per hour of footage. If you want to store AVI video on your computer or use it on a portable media device such as an MP3 player or a cell phone, you can create a much smaller file while retaining much of the video quality by converting the AVI into an MPEG-4.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install the Any Video Converter software. The download is available on the Any Video Converter page, and there is a version for Windows and Mac computers. Once downloaded, follow the screens to complete the simple installation.

    • 2

Open the AVI file you would like to convert in Any Video Converter. Files can be added by clicking on the "Add Video" button at the top of the screen. Browse for the file on your system, click on the file to highlight it and click "OK."

    • 3

Select the MP4 file type for your output file. The output file type is selected next to "Profile" in Any Video Converter. There are two available MP4 options. The first is located in the "Mobile Phone" category. If you select this file type, your video will automatically be set to the perfect parameters for most cell phone screens. If you are not going to use the MP4 on your cell phone, you can select "Customized MP4 Movie" under "Common Used Video Formats". The information regarding the MP4 will populate below the "Profile" section, and there will be a drop-down menu labeled "Video Size" where you can change the size of your MP4 to whatever size you need.

Set an output folder. Click on the "File" menu and go to "Set Output Folder." A window will come up where you can browse your hard drive for the folder. When you locate it, click "OK." Your converted file will save to this location.

Start the conversion. Click on the "Convert" button at the top of the screen and Any Video Converter will begin converting the AVI to MPEG-4. The status of the conversion is monitored on the screen, and when the conversion is complete, your MPEG-4 will be available in your chosen output folder.
