How to Use Inexpensive Mason Jars for Outdoor Decorating

Normal Mason Jar...Transformed!
Normal Mason Jar...Transformed!

Mason jars are evocative of quaint country houses, quiet evenings spent on the porch swing, catching firefly's for nature's flashlight! Read this article to see some creative inexpensive ways to use mason jars for outdoor decorating.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mason Jar of all sizes.
  1. Step 1

Lets start out with an "ordinary" usage. A Mason Jar Flower Vase.

Take a large mason jar and fill the bottom with rock or pretty stones, colored or non and then fill with water (you can add food coloring to this water to achieve match your decor or theme) then add a few colorful flowers.

These can be used on the ground, on food tables, on your deck or as a table centerpiece clustered together and surrounded by candles.

  2. Step 2

This one takes a bit more supplies. These are Inexpensive Citronella Candles. Supplies: Any size mason jar, Blue & White kitty litter crystals, tea light citronella candles.

Fill the jars about 3/4 of the way full with the kitty litter and place a citronella candle into the jar on top of the kitty litter. Then push it down a bit so it sits flush surrounded by kitty litter.

*You can use any type of filler but I love the way the kitty litter crystals glitter and they are very inexpensive.

The jars protect the candle from any wind and you can surround your guest with flickering candle light while keeping the bugs away!

  3. Step 3

    Hanging/Freestanding Floating Candle/Flower/Fish Decoration

This idea is so versatile, you can use whatever you want. Just get mason jars of any size, thin wire (if you want it to hang), flowers/candles/fish.

If this is to be used to hang, first cut a piece of wire 1.5 feet long, wind the wire around the jar just below the lip 2 times until you come to the tip of wire that you started with then twist this tip to the base of the wire that is left. Repeat this process with another piece of wire starting and ending on the opposite side of the first. The the ends of the long pieces of wire together at the top to create a loop to hang the jars from. Fill the jars with water then add a flowe, fish or candle.

These look especially GREAT when hanging from a tree with an exotic flower floating inside and the sun filtering through!

  4. Step 4

You can also use mason jars as a "package" for a party favor for your guests. Just fill with anything edible like herbs, salts, honey or somethign that smells pretty like dried flower potpurri or even a candle or candies or cookies. Add a pretty ribbon tied around the neck that matches your decor and you're good to go. This makes an easy inexpensive treat for all guests.

  5. Step 5

The last idea, is to use mason jars for cups. Fill the mason jars with a refreshing liquid such as pink lemonade, put the lid on them, then put them in a bucket full of ice. It is a welcoming site on a hot day and will give guests a warm homey feeling!
