Things You'll Need:
- Siphoning kit
- Gas can
- Hex wrench
- Jack stands
- Lug wrench
- Ratchet wrench/screwdriver
- Floor jack
- Wooden board
- Vice-grip pliers
-
Step 1
Open the gas cap to the fuel tank. Remove the fuel pump relay from the engine's fuse box, then turn the engine on and wait for it to stall, signaling that the pressure is relieved. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
-
Step 2
Siphon out all remaining gas into an approved gas can. Use a siphoning kit from an auto parts store to remove the gas.
-
Step 3
Remove the flange on the body for the fuel filler tube by removing the screws--it usually requires a hex wrench. This is only necessary on a few models, usually pickup trucks, where the filler neck is permanently attached to the tank.
-
Step 4
Raise the vehicle's rear end on jack stands, at least on the side where the filler tube is. On some models, remove the wheel and fender well on that side with the required wrench and/or screwdriver. There can also b a skid plate covering the tank; disconnect it by removing its mounting bolts.
-
Step 5
Disconnect all hoses and lines from the tank that can be reached. These are usually connected with quick-connect fittings that are disconnected by pressing the tabs or by clamps that are loosened.
-
Step 6
Support the tank from the underside. You can use the stock floor jack that came with the vehicle, but place a board between it and the tank to prevent damaging the tank. You can also have an assistant hold onto the tank.
-
Step 7
Unbolt and remove the straps holding the tank to the vehicle and slowly lower it just enough to disconnect the electrical connectors and remaining lines (along with the filler neck, if possible). Lower the tank the rest of the way to remove it
