How to Celebrate Your Birthday at Disneyland

Save

Disneyland periodically offers a sales promotion that can make for a magical day. If you arrive on your birthday, admission to the park is free. More than that, the staff sets up a few special surprises throughout the park to help make the day memorable. Some promotions are available only if you pre-register.

Things You'll Need

  • Valid I.D.
  • Autograph book
  • Make reservations at a particular Disneyland restaurant for the birthday. Call (714) 781-3463. A number of locales at the park can be booked for a party, complete with Disney characters who come to say hello. You can order surprises like a goodie bag, pop-up centerpiece or cake for an additional fee. The restaurant schedules fill up quickly, so make a reservation at least 60 days in advance.

  • Go to Disneyland's website to register the birthday at least two weeks ahead of time. (See Resources below.) The registration is free. Disneyland will send you an email confirmation, then a reminder two weeks before the big day.

  • Print out the reminder, and take it with you to the park on the birthday, along with a valid I.D. (a driver's license, a notarized birth certificate or a government-issued photo I.D. such as a passport). Show it at the ticket booth to receive free admission. If you didn't receive the Disney reminder yet, bring the I.D. and tell the ticket person that you registered online.

  • Go to City Hall as soon as you pass through the main gates. It's on the left-hand side of the entrance. Tell them you're celebrating a birthday. They'll provide a free commemorative button, as well as a telephone call from a Disney character wishing a happy birthday. As you go through the park, employees (or "cast members") who spot the button will stop to say, "Happy birthday."

  • Ask the ragtime band in New Orleans Square to play a song. They'll strike up something special for the birthday occasion.

  • Go on the three Disneyland rides that involve a birthday party: Winnie the Pooh ride in Critter Country, Alice in Wonderland ride in Fantasyland (though granted, it's an "unbirthday party"), and Haunted Mansion in New Orleans Square (which features a spectral birthday girl blowing out the candles).

  • Take an autograph book with you through the park, and ask the Disney characters you meet to sign it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a Disneyland Annual Pass, show it to the cast member in City Hall during step four. You'll receive a choice of additional goodies: Fast Pass tickets allowing you to skip the lines for popular rides, a gift certificate for purchasing souvenirs, or a one-day pass allowing you to return to the park for free during a blackout day (a day when your annual pass is no good).
