When you install a new hard drive in Windows XP, the operating system automatically assigns the drive a letter name designation. A hard drive with multiple partitions will be assigned multiple drive letters. For instance, a computer with one hard drive that has two partitions will probably be assigned drive C and drive D for the two partitions. It is possible, however, to rename the letter designations for any drive or drive partition in Windows XP.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Click "Start," "Control Panel," "Administrative Tools," then "Computer Management."

  2. Step 2

Click on the option "Disk Management" on the left hand side of the computer management window.

  3. Step 3

Search the list of drives and partitions that populates and right click on the one you want to rename.

  4. Step 4

Click "Change Drive Letter and Paths," and then click "Change."

  5. Step 5

Click "Assign the Following Drive Letter," enter the drive letter name you want to use for the partition, and click "OK." Click "Yes" to finalize the changes when prompted.

Tips & Warnings
  • Devices other than hard drives will also be given letter designations, such as DVD ROM drives and floppy drives. Windows may not allow you to change the name of a partition if it is your current boot drive.
