How to Write a Doctor's Curriculum Vitae

A curriculum vitae (CV) is a written expression of a doctor's professional and academic life. Unlike general resume rules of keeping it to one page or tailoring the resume based on a job, a CV is a living, breathing document that should be changed each time you complete a new accomplishment. Here are some suggested components to include in the CV.

      Create a section called "CONTACT INFORMATION" with the following information: name, home address, work address (optional), telephone number(s) and email address.

      Create a section called "PERSONAL INFORMATION" with the following information: date of birth, place of birth, citizenship or visa status, gender and spouse's name (if applicable).

      Create a section called "EDUCATION" and include each degree obtained beginning with a Bachelor's degree. Include the name of the school, the name of the degree and date(s) attended.

      Create a section called "HONORS AND AWARDS" and include all professional and academic awards, particularly those related to your current area of practice. List the granting organization, the name of the award and the date presented.

      Create a section called "PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS." Include all professional and academic memberships including the name of the organization, the type of membership held and the corresponding date(s).

      Create a section for "EMPLOYMENT." Include all medical employment. Name the employer,
      position(s) held, primary duties and corresponding date(s).

      Create a section called "PUBLICATIONS" and list all published material. Refer to the American Medical Association (AMA) for guidelines on how to list the publications. You can include articles, online publications, books and so on.

      Create a section called "PRESENTATIONS" and list all presentations you have attended or given.

      Review the CV to be sure that all formatting is consistent. Review for accuracy and ensure that all necessary information has been included.

Tips & Warnings

  • Because CVs can change rapidly as new entries are created, it can be helpful to update it on a regular schedule (i.e., monthly, quarterly)
