How to Increase a Computer's RAM
If your computer seems slow, sluggish, or overwhelmed when running multiple programs, it may be time to increase the RAM memory. RAM memory can be compared to short-term memory in the human brain. It's not really permanent storage of information, but it works great for programs in use. Adequate RAM memory will often lead to a better running and faster computer. Increasing your computer's RAM memory is actually quite easy. Here's how to do it.

1
Identify what type of RAM memory your computer requires. This can be easily accomplished if you know the model and make of your computer. Websites like Newegg.com will guide you through RAM selection based upon these facts. You may also want to check the computer manufacturer's website to determine the RAM requirements and what is the maximum amount of RAM memory that your computer can handle. Also, check your current level of RAM by right clicking on "My Computer".

2
Once you have received your RAM memory to be used as the upgrade, unplug your computer from the wall. This is done to avoid any potential electrocution.

3
Remove the side panel on the tower of your computer and locate the existing RAM memory. This will provide you access to the memory slots or sockets inside the computer. The existing RAM memory will look exactly like your new memory and it will likely have empty memory slots next to it. This is where you will install the new RAM.
-
4
Ground yourself to prevent any static electricity discharge before you touch any internal computer parts or your new RAM memory stick. This is done to prevent damage to the components. You can accomplish this by touching a non painted metal object.
-
5
Remove the new RAM memory from its package gently and prepare to place the new RAM memory in the slot. You will need to press the RAM into the slot firmly, but also carefully.
-
6
Insert the new RAM memory in the empty slot immediately next to the existing RAM memory. To do this, you may need to push the plastic locking mechanisms found at either end of the socket down. The locking mechanisms will typically pop back up into place as you gently and firmly push the new RAM into the slot.

7
Replace the tower cover and plug the computer back in to the outlet. Turn the computer back on and make sure that everything runs accordingly. Check the amount of RAM memory that your computer now has by right clicking on "My Computer" which will show you "system properties". You should see a larger number next to RAM than when you began.
