How to Set Up a Computer Monitor
To view anything on your computer, you'll need to set up a computer monitor. Setting up a computer monitor includes connecting the monitor to your computer, adjusting the monitor properties, adjusting screen position and adjusting the contrast. The process takes around 10 minutes for most users. Using dual monitors or using your television as a monitor may take longer, depending on the hardware and settings available on your computer and television.

If desired, purchase a monitor cable compatible with your computer and monitor. Most monitors come complete with a 15-pin connector cable. However, if you want to use an HDMI, S-Video or VGA cable connection, you will need to buy the cable separately. Cables can be purchased at computer retailers such as Best Buy or at online retailers such as Newegg.com (see Additional Resources).

Be sure that your computer is turned off. If necessary, connect the cable to your monitor (most monitors will have the cable connected already). Also, connect the power cable that comes with your monitor if it's not already connected. Match the cable end to the available ports on your computer. Plug the power cable into the wall once the other end is connected to the monitor.

Connect the monitor to your computer. If you're using a desktop, you will need to turn the monitor around so the back is facing you. On laptops, the port will either be on the back or side of the laptop. Locate the matching port for your cable. Most ports will have either a Video, Display, or Monitor symbol near the port.

4
Start your computer. Allow your system to automatically recognize and install the monitor. If the operating system doesn't install the monitor or an error occurs, insert the software that came with your monitor and follow the installation wizard prompts.

5
Select the monitor (if using dual monitors) and adjust the resolution and color quality. Right-click anywhere on your desktop and choose "Properties." Choose the "Settings" tab. If using dual monitors, choose your monitor from the "Display" drop down box. Adjust your resolution by using the "Resolution" slider. The higher the resolution, the smaller objects appear on your desktop. Adjust your color quality by using the "Color Quality" drop down box.

6
Adjust your screen size and contrast if necessary. For laptops, consult your computer manual to determine which function keys adjust which features. Typically, the contrast uses F7 and F8 (or F8 with your arrow keys).
For desktops, locate either a row of buttons or a small knob on your monitor. The buttons may be hidden behind a small panel on the front or side of the monitor. The knob will display a menu of screen adjustments. The buttons will adjust each feature separately.

Tips & Warnings
Ensure the correct ports are available on your computer, monitor or television before purchasing a cable. For instance, a 15-pin video port on your computer will not accept an S-Video cable. Most ports are labeled on devices.
Do not adjust any display properties until you've installed your monitor through the operating system and software and ensured the correct monitor is selected in the display properties.
