A DVR, or digital video recorder, is a box that connects to your television. Using its built-in hard drive and TV tuner it can pause, rewind and record live television. With a few clicks of a remote control button you can easily set your DVR to record any program you aren't going to be home to watch. But if you're not at home and realize you need to record something, you're not necessarily out of luck.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • IPod Touch or iPhone
  1. Step 1

Check if your DVR can be set from a remote location. As of mid-2009, only TiVO and Dish Network DVR boxes allowed the user to change settings from a remote location, though more companies are expected to adopt this capability.

  2. Step 2

From your DVR manufacturer's web page, select which programs you want your DVR to record. If you're a TiVO user, point your web browser to www.tivo.com and select the "My TiVO" button. Once you log into your account, tell your DVR to record what you'd like; the changes will be programmed into your DVR box almost instantly. Once you log in, the program guide for your area will be automatically displayed. Simply find a show you wish to record, click on it and select the "Record" option. For Dish Network users, go to the Dish Network web page. By logging into your account you can accomplish the same thing.

  3. Step 3

Program your DVR from your iPod Touch or iPhone. TiVO and Dish Network DVR users can download an iPod Touch or iPhone application that will allow them to log directly into their accounts on the manufacturer's web page and make changes to the programs their DVR boxes are set to record.
