Split ends - the hair splitting into two or more strands is often the result of using high heat settings on hair dryers and over-use of coloring and straightening the hair. This is common knowledge, but what you may not be aware of is that the manner in which you wash your hair also contributes to hair splitting. So, trim those split ends and see here how to correctly wash your hair to prevent further damage.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Don't pile your hair on top of your head while shampooing in the shower. Instead, leave your hair hanging straight down. Apply shampoo on the crown of your head and with a light touch, work the shampoo from the scalp down the length of your hair. Vigorous shampooing with hair bunched up on top of the head causes split ends.

  2. Step 2

Never skip the conditioning of your hair after shampooing, or skimp on the quality of hair conditioner. A conditioner won't repair split ends, but will help to prevent further splitting when brushing or combing. The best conditioners are ones that leave no residue on the hair and are normally found at a hair salon. Ask a hair stylist to recommend the best one for your hair type.

  3. Step 3

Most split ends occur because of brushing the hair while it's wet. If you must brush your before it dries, do so very gently. And give your hair a break - any days that you can avoid brushing your hair while wet and avoid using a hair dryer are days you won't be causing more split ends .
