Download both spyware and virus scan programs for your computer. For a free and simple solution, try Lavasoft (Adaware) and AVG (Virus Scan Program). Find links to both programs in Resources.

Install your spyware and virus scan programs. If you choose to use the program listed in step 1, click on the installation files you've downloaded and follow the "default" installations for both programs. Otherwise follow your program's installation instructions via the included readme file or user manual.

Update your "virus and spyware definition files" before performing a system scan. During the installation of both programs, note the option to update your files. If you miss that step, click on the "Update" options via your main program screens.

Use the "Scan" or "Scan Now" features on your programs to begin the computer scan. As your computer scans you will find "Threats." Write down these threats and use Virus dictionaries provided by Lavasoft and AVG (see Additional Resources) to determine if the spyware is intruding on your privacy or stealing your information.
