Shiatsu is a massage therapy that originated in Japan. Unlike other massage techniques, shiatsu uses the palms and elbows. A shiatsu session can last an hour, or more. When performed properly, a shiatsu massage can help relieve arthritis, muscle spasms, stiffness and joint pains. Getting a shiatsu massage once or twice a week promotes good health and circulation. The best place to perform a shiatsu massage is on the floor.

  1. Step 1

Instruct your subject to lie down on the floor, face up. Ask him to breathe deeply for ten minutes so oxygen penetrates his muscles. This will allow a more comfortable massage.

  2. Step 2

Massage the face and head with your fingers and palms using rhythmic kneading motions for 15 minutes. This will enhance blood circulation and give the face a healthy glow.

  3. Step 3

Massage the neck and shoulders with your palms and thumbs in a clockwise rotation for ten minutes. Alternate up and down the neck and use light pressure. This will open up your patient's energy channels.

  4. Step 4

Slide your palms and fingers down the arms and chest, gently kneading in circular motions for 15 minutes. Continue kneading the sides of the abdomen to help the kidneys excrete toxins.

  5. Step 5

Use your elbows to work on the thighs, legs and feet for 15 minutes. Apply pressure by rocking back and forth while on your knees. When you reach the feet, stretch them upwards with your hands. This technique enhances blood circulation.

  6. Step 6

Instruct your patient to breathe deeply for five minutes after the massage. Ask her to slowly sit up. Always offer your patients a glass of water after the massage to help flush out toxins.
