How to Disable DEP in Windows XP

Data Execution Prevention appeared in SP2 for Windows XP. While the software is a valuable upgrade, it can occasionally cause conflict when running certain applications. Luckily, Microsoft has created a way to disable DEP for applications. You should never completely disable DEP but, by disabling it for applications, you can determine if it is causing a conflict or if another software problem is at fault.

Instructions

    • 1

Click Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced. Look for the Performance section and select "Settings." In the window that opens, select the "Data Execute" tab.

    • 2

Click the option to turn on DEP for all programs except those you select. Click "Add" and select the applications you want to turn DEP off for. For each application you will need to repeat the process of finding the application in the dialogue box, clicking "Open" and choosing "Apply."

    • 3

Select "OK" after you have added all programs you wish to disable DEP for. Reboot your system to execute the changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • DEP is protective software and should not be disabled unless you are experiencing problems.
