How to Block Facebook Content From Specific Friends

As more and more people join social networking sites and Facebook in particular, you may be increasingly uncomfortable with how much of your information is out there for your friends to see. Learn how to block specific profile content from individual Facebook friends so neither you nor your mom's best friend have to suffer the discomfort of her viewing the pictures from your last New Year's Eve party or for the sheer satisfaction of preventing your ex from knowing exactly what you've been up to.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your Facebook account. Every time you post a new status update, photo, video or link, click the audience selector in the bottom right corner of the post and select "Custom." In the "Hide this from" section, type the names of the specific friends you do not want to see it. Click "Save Changes."

    • 2

Click the "Account" menu in the upper right corner and select "Privacy Settings" from the drop-down menu. Select "Custom" in the "Control Your Default Privacy" section and type the names of friends you don't want to see posts you make to your Facebook from a Facebook App on a smartphone, where there isn't an inline audience selector.

    • 3

Click "Profile" in the upper right corner of your page and then click "Edit Profile." Next to each section of information available on this page, you can change the audience selector at any time. Whenever you choose "Custom," you have the opportunity to restrict specific friends from seeing the information.

    • 4

Return to your profile and click the "Photos" tab in the left column. Click "See All Photos" at the top of the screen. Each album has an audience selector under it. As before, choose "Custom" and specify friends you want to block from seeing your photos.

Tips & Warnings

  • While it is possible to block content from work colleagues, it is best to not be "Friends" with coworkers on Facebook or other social networking sites as private life and professional life are best when not mixed. You do not want something potentially damaging to your career to slip through.
