How to Make Macros in WoW

In World of Warcraft, there are hundreds of commands for your character to act on. Typing these commands out can be time-consuming, especially in the middle of a battle. Setting up macros for the commands you use often can help save time. A macro creates a command shortcut by assigning the command to a clickable icon that you can store with other commands at the bottom of the game screen. Rather than typing out the command or searching for it in a menu, you can simply click the macro's icon to carry out your desired command.

Instructions

    • 1

Open World of Warcraft and log in as the character you wish to create macros for. Access the macro window by typing "/macro" in the command field at the bottom of the screen or go to the main menu and click on "Macros."

    • 2

There will be two tabs at the top of the macro screen. The "General Macros" tab will create macros that are available to every character on your account. The second tab, "(Insert Character's Name) Specific Macros," are only available for the character you are using. If you want all of your characters to have access to your new macro, select "General." Otherwise, select the tab specific to your character.

    • 3

Click the button at the bottom of the macro screen that says "New." This will bring up a screen to the right with a text field and icons. Use the text field to name your macro according to the action it will perform. For example, you may want to name the macro "Greet" if the actions will be to wave and say "Hello."

Browse through the icons and select the icon you want to associate with your macro by clicking on it. Once you have selected your icon, click the red "Okay" button at the bottom of the screen. You will now see your macro's title and icon in the main macro screen.

    • 5

Click within the text field at the bottom of the screen labeled, "Enter Macro Commands." The character limit for a macro is 255 words. You can enter any World of Warcraft commands, such as "/dance" to make your character dance or "/spit" to make your character spit. You may also follow the command with text that your character will say while performing the command. For example, you can make your character cough and say "Excuse me" by typing the following into the text field: "/cough /say Excuse Me." Several commands can be combined for a single macro, but the text must be less than 255 characters.

The macro automatically saves when you close the macro screen or use the macro. To use the macro, click on its icon at the top of the macro screen and drag it to your action bar at the bottom of your screen to insert it. You should now see the macro's icon in your action bar.

Click on the macro icon to test it. Your character should perform the commands that were typed in the macro screen. To edit the command, re-open the macro screen and edit the command field.

Tips & Warnings

  • Create macros for the commands you use most often to save time and make your game play more efficiently.

  • You cannot interrupt a macro once you have initiated the command. Long macros will freeze your ability to control your character until the macro's commands are completed.
