How to Convert a Bolt of Fabric into Yards

Bolts of fabric may not always have yardage marked.

Many quilters and bargain shoppers don't always have the luxury of knowing how many yards of fabric are on a roll. Sometimes, the yards aren't clearly marked. Other times, the shopper may be looking at a roll of fabric that has been marked in inches or discounted due to the roll being a remainder. In these situations, it is helpful to know how to convert a roll to yards.

Things You'll Need

• Flat workspace
• Tape measure
• Calculator

Instructions

1. Unroll the cloth over the flat work space.

2. Hold the measuring tape even with the cut edge of the cloth.

3. Measure the cloth along the selvage to the center of the roll. Keep your measurements exact.

4. Divide the length measurement in inches by 36 (one yard) to give the total yardage.
