Step 1
Go to the IP that is assigned to your router. The directions that come with your router will indicate this IP address, along with your username and password. Type the address in a browser and it will take you to the login screen.
-
Step 2
Set the SSID, or the name of the network. This will distinguish your network from others in the area, and help protect your network from being hacked. Don't use personal information that can easily identify you.
-
Step 3
Select the connection type: DHCP for a cable modem, or PPPoE for DSL. Your Internet provider can tell you which choice you need, and if a username and password is required. Generally, DHCP is likely to work.
-
Step 4
Under the DHCP settings, choose the internal IP address for each of the computers on your network. It will start with the IP address and incrementally add one to each new computer.
-
Step 5
Go to the administration tab or menu and select a new password. Choose a password that you will remember; if you forget your password, you can reset the router to the default password and setting by pushing the router's reset button.
-
Step 6
Go the wireless section and turn on the WEP password protection. Generate a password that is encrypted to keep outsiders from being able to access your network. You can also choose MAC filtering to limit computers from wirelessly connecting unless they are listed by their MAC address.
