How to Distress Denim Shorts
Distressed denim shorts are the hot look of the summer. You can spend upwards of $100 on a designer pair, or you can create your own look for much less. Distressing takes time and patience, but it also allows you to create a look all your own, customized to fit your personal style. Do more than one pair of shorts at a time and you will have your summer wardrobe completed in a day. Does this Spark an idea?

Cut a pair of jeans to the desired length. For more details as how to measure and cut the jeans, see Resources.

Bleach the shorts. Place them in a large bucket and fill with water so that they are completely submerged. Add 1 cup of liquid bleach. Mix the bleach and water with a wooden spoon. Let them sit in the bleach until they are the desired color.

Wash the shorts. If you do not wash them, the bleach will continue to fade their color. After washing, let them dry completely.

Sand the shorts. Lay the shorts flat and use a piece of sandpaper to rub thin areas into the shorts. Use short, firm sanding motions, and sand in any direction. If you sand long enough, you will create a hole, which is actually good look for distressed denim.

Fray the edges. Use a razor or sharp knife to fray the edges of the shorts. Lay the blade along the edge of the pant legs and use a scraping motion to fray.

Tips & Warnings
Each time you wash your shorts, the fray on the edges and around the holes will get longer, so you might have to trim it occasionally.
