When you are starting out, the process of search engine optimization can seem intimidating at best, incomprehensible at worst. It is really a simple process, if you take it one step at a time. In this article I will be addressing how to use the Google Adwords keyword search function. Google Adwords will help you see which keywords are highly searched, which means more traffic for your article or blog.

  • Internet connection
  • Functioning web browser
  1. Step 1

    Decide what subject you want to write about. The possibilities here are endless, so I’m going to randomly pick Chewing Gum in School. Who doesn’t like chewing gum, right? And lots of kids out there might be interested to know some strategies for getting to chew gum in school. So, we use the Google Adwords keyword search will help us find out how they’re searching.

  2. Step 2

    Next, you need to make a list of potential keywords to run through the Google Adwords keyword search function. Think of all the ways someone might search for the topic. For this example, we might search for:
    Chewing gum at school
    Gum chewing at school
    Chew gum in school
    Chewing gum in school

  3. Step 3

    In this step, you will go to the Google Adwords keyword search page. https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
    Paste the phrases you came up with into the box.

  4. Step 4

    When the results appear, you will see that, ‘Chewing Gum in School’ has the highest CPC, which stands for Cost Per Click. That’s an estimate of how much money you’ll make if someone clicks on an ad while they’re reading your article. It also has the highest monthly search volume, with 2400 people around the world searching for the phrase ‘Chewing Gum in School’ every month.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't forget to check and see how many other pages are searching for the same phrase! A million people are searching for the word Google, and there are a zillion results! With that much competition, you'll never even make it to the top 100 pages!
