How to Create an After School Program

After-school programs are beneficial to all students, especially those who are struggling academically or even socially. With more one-on-one attention, teachers and tutors can make a difference in individual lives and become aware of specific needs that may get missed during the regular school day. The following steps will show you how to begin an after-school program.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the goals for your program based on the needs of the children in the community. This information can be ascertained by sending home questionnaires with the students for the parents to complete. Another option would be to host a parent night in which you can meet face-to-face with those interested and ask them directly about their needs.

    • 2

Research possible funding sources, beginning with the Federal Department of Education website, where there are links to information about funding specific programs and other grant information (see Resources). Donations from your community leaders through their businesses and state grants may also be available.

    • 3

Once you have a source of funding, write the plan for your program. If you are utilizing a grant, there will be specific guidelines for writing your after-school program plan. Whatever the format, you will need to include the goals, staffing and salary information and a tentative daily schedule.

The final step is implementation. This includes hiring of staff members, scheduling, and training sessions that explain program goals, procedures and guidelines. Assuming that you are the director as well as creator of this after-school program, your job will be to directly supervise the teachers and other staff as well as ensure the well-being of the students in your care.
