How to Clean Computer Components
Over time, your computer hardware components are going to attract dust and other particles that can slow down the operation of your system. When this happens, you need to clean all the parts and remove the dust from the computer case. Cleaning the components of your personal computer should be done on a regular basis to ensure that your system operates efficiently when you need it.

1
Turn off the computer system and unplug the power supply from the electrical outlet. Place your computer on a flat surface where you can get full access to the components.
-
2
Detach the outer case from the base of the central processing unit (CPU) by using a screwdriver to unfasten the screws on the back of the case. Slide the case cover off the base and set it out of the way.

3
Clean the dust from the inside of the case by using a can of compressed air and blowing all the loose dust and particles out of the case. Once you are done, inspect the case to see if there is any dust remaining on the components.
-
4
Dampen a clean, dry cloth with alcohol and wipe down any nonelectrical parts that still have dust on them. Also clean the screen on the back of the power supply fan to remove any dust buildup with the alcohol-dampened cloth.
-
5
Clean any remaining dust on the inside components with another clean, dry cloth. Replace the case cover and secure it to the base with screws.
-
6
Plug the electrical cord back into the computer power supply and then into the electrical outlet. Turn your computer on to verify that it is working properly.

Tips & Warnings
To prevent electrical damage to the computer components, always ground the screwdriver by touching the metal to a table or other metal piece before touching the computer with the tool.
Never use any liquid directly on the computer when attempting to clean the components. If you have to use liquid, it needs to be only water or alcohol, and then only use it by applying the liquid to a clean, dry cloth.
