How to Show Hidden File Name Extensions in Windows

In operating systems that predated Windows, the type of file was displayed at the end of the file name. However, Windows doesn't ordinarily display file extensions. Nevertheless, it's occasionally important to know what is the extension of the file. In such a case, you can view the hidden extensions.

      Go to the "Start" menu and select the "Control Panel."

      From the list that appear, select "Folder Options."

      Under the Advanced Settings pane, remove the check mark next to "Hide extensions for known file types." Press "OK" at the bottom to apply the settings. Windows will now show the file name extensions.

      To hide the file name extensions, check the box next to "Hide extensions for known file types." Press "OK" at the bottom to apply the settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're on a Mac this is a bit easier; go into the advanced tab of the finder preferences and click "Show all file extensions."
