Porridge, or congee as it is sometimes called, is a simple meal made by boiling oats or other grains in water or milk. It can be easily cooked in the morning for breakfast or as a nice little snack. It's nutritious and low in fat, which is important for those who enjoy living a more healthful life. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Bowl
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1 cup milk or water
  • Microwave
  • Any extras you like to add

Instructions

      Place rolled oats in a cereal bowl.

      Pour the milk or water into the bowl. You'll need to fill the bowl beyond the oats as they will absorb some of the liquid while cooking.

      Add any extras you'd like to have to spice up your simple porridge. A touch of sugar or some fruit will go long way in making this a delicious treat.

      Place the bowl in the microwave and set it for about 2 minutes. You may wish to take it out half way and stir the oats. Also, check if the milk was fully absorbed and add more if necessary. To cook the porridge on the stove, heat it in a pot on low and stir occasionally. When it starts to bubble, it's done.

      Take the porridge out of the microwave or off the stove, and let it cool for a minute or two.

Tips & Warnings

  • Strawberries, apples, cinnamon, brown sugar and bananas are great extras to add.

  • Be sure to give the porridge a minute to cool as it will be hot coming out of the microwave.

  • Make sure the bowl used is microwavable.
