How to Unzip TGZ Files

TGZ files are the Linux and Unix equivalent of ZIP files in Windows. Free utilities are available that allow you to both create and unzip TGZ files. Zipping a file in the TGZ format allows you to turn a folder of files into a single compressed file for easier transport between computers and users. Documents, executables, photos, videos and audio files can be compressed to help you reduce file size while sending files through email, through a network share or on a flash drive.

Instructions

Download and install Quick Zip. Double-click the downloaded file to begin the installation wizard. Unless you want to install the file in a different location, the defaults throughout the wizard work for most users. The only other option you may want to choose is to create a desktop icon.

    • 2
      Quick Zip main window

Open Quick Zip. It will either be located on your desktop as an icon or in your "Programs" list. Go to "Start," then "All Programs" to locate Quick Zip.

    • 3
      "Tar Archive" window

Press the "Open" button in the toolbar to browse for your TGZ file. To only see TGZ files, select "Tar Archive" from the "Files of Type" drop-down box. Select your file and click "Open."

    • 4

Select "Extract" from the toolbar. Choose where you want files extracted and press "Extract."

    • 5

Re-zip the files by creating a new TGZ file in Quick Zip, and add all the desired files.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add or delete files in Quick Zip without having to unzip the TGZ file archive. You can also extract only the files you wish to edit.

  • Keep the original archive file until you're absolutely certain about any changes you've made to the unzipped version. This will give you a backup copy in the event of an accidental change or deletion.
