Mens hair gel is great for guys who don't want that flowery smell that hair products for women have. In fact, this is the main reason why men buy gel hair products that state they are for men. Believe it or not there are still men who don't want anyone to know they use gel or any styling aid. This is because back in the day hair styling was thought to be only for girls. Oh my, oh me how times have changed...

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Barber shop

Mens hair gel can create many different looks if the guy knows how to use it. Depending on hair length he can take on a whole new look and many do, since they have hair stylists to show them how it's done.

Back in the day men went to the barber shop where there was no muss or fuss only basic hair care. Well not today, today men do all sorts of things to their hair just like women and are darn near as picky.

  2. Step 2
    Apply gel

    Apply gel

When you use mens hair gel it's important to use it sparingly unless you want a greasy look or hair that won't move. The wet look is different than the greasy look, the wet look looks cool, and the greasy look simply looks dirty.

To get the wet look you need to towel dry hair until it's nearly dry. Then mix the gel in hands with water to dilute it somewhat and apply to the hair and comb it through. Proceed to blow dry hair with cool air, so as not to liquefy the gel. Then repeat the gel mixture with water in hands and apply again this time styling the hair the direction you want it to go using fingers.

  3. Step 3
    Not natural

    Not natural

If you have short hair or hair that behaves well you may be able to get by without blow drying. Blow drying aids in control and makes stubborn hair comply. Once you have the wet look it helps if you have a freezing spray to set it in and a very important tip is, do not comb through or mess with hair once it's finished or the wet look reverts back to the dry look!

If you blow dry and decide you want the hair to look textured with partial wet/dry look then add the gel to selected areas only. To do this you use fingertips with gel on them randomly throughout for a more natural look. If you don't care if hair looks natural and want the wild look, then be strategic about where you want to add texture as well as more mens hair gel.

  4. Step 4
    Great hi lite

You can also add a diffuser to the hair dryer for a set look; a diffuser allows you to dry the hair without disturbing the style, similar to a bonnet dryer. This can be done for the wet or dry look and let's you dry hair faster than doing it naturally.

Mens hair gel also works well on long hair to keep frizz under control and to hold it in place. You have to be careful with long hair to avoid the greasy look, especially if it's not curly, spiked or separated. A well done hi-light helps and creates a more textured look.

It takes a little trial and error when you begin to use styling aids, but in time it gets easier and before you know it you style hair like a pro.

on 5/23/2009 How smart to do an article of "mens" hair gel. I don't know that I've ever seen anything written to instruct men on how to use hair gel. Nice thinking./*****
