Foundation drainage is absolutely essential to a healthy foundation. No matter how deep your foundation is, it will always need a healthy drainage system. Without it, water will stand against the foundation walls and eventually seep through. Installing foundation drainage is more challenging physically than mentally. The amount of time required for the installation will ultimately be based on the size of the foundation and the speed at which you work.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gloves
  • Shovel
  • 8-inch perforated pipe with a sock
  • Utility knife
  • Hand saw
  • Pipe tees and elbows
  • Gravel
  1. Step 1

Spread a gravel base of about 2 inches thick and 12 inches wide. The gravel should be placed at the bottom of the foundation wall and against the corner where the foundation meets the footer.

  2. Step 2
    Pipe with sock

Measure the amount of perforated pipe needed from corner to corner. Do this by measuring from one corner of the foundation to the other. Transfer this measurement to the pipe. Cut through the sock with a utility knife and through the pipe with a hand saw.

  3. Step 3
    Elbow

    Elbow

Lay the pipe on top of the gravel and throw a few shovels of gravel over and around it to keep it in place. Make the turn at the next corner by adding an elbow.

  4. Step 4
    Tee fitting

Add a tee if you are making a double turn at the corner. You might do this if you want to extend the drain on around the foundation and in the opposite direction at the point of connection.

  5. Step 5

Cover all pipe with 6 inches of gravel. You may leave one end open if you wish, however, it is not necessary to do this. Because of the holes that run around the entire surface of the pipe, it will receive water from above, distribute it down the pipe, and allow it to drain out the bottom holes of the pipe. Fill in with dirt over the pipe and landscape. The sock will prevent any dirt from entering the pipe. You now have a dry and healthy foundation.
