1
Avoid strenuous workouts, especially any running or jogging up hills or participating in any work that can lead to fast movements that can put stress on the affected area.
-
2
Wear comfortable shoes that offer proper ankle support, great cushioning and soles that are not too stiff. With that being said, you also don't want a heel that's too cushioned as it has been shown to contribute to Achilles tendon pain.

3
Avoid flat shoes, including sandals, while the area heals---this includes walking barefoot.
-
4
Purchase a shoe insert with a heel pad. This can reduce the pressure that's placed on the affected area and lead to a quicker recovery. Dr. Scholls offers several inserts with added heel cushioning.
-
5
Apple heat to the tendon within the first 24 hours of an injury and sooner if possible, then monitor the swelling. You can use ointments such as Icy Hot or heat pads or a warm wrapped cloth if you want a more accessible option.
-
6
Stay off the affected area as much as possible to avoid further swelling and other damage to the area.
-
7
Consult with a doctor if the pain persists. Some injuries to the Achilles region may require surgery to properly correct, but only a trained physician should make that assessment.
