Design a Race Car

Race cars are often completely decked out in various colors. Often these are the colors of the sponsors that support the race car but they can also be original paint schemes. One of the most entertaining race cars to design is the Indy 500 car. These cars looks like a cross between a jet and a race car and are some of the fastest vehicles to travel on land. Creating a design for a race car can be done as a present for a race enthusiast or as a way to express your creativity and design ideas on one of the fastest machines around.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper
  • Drafting pencil
  • Black ink pen
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Art makers
  • Colored pencils
  1. Step 1

Draw the body of the race car with a large teardrop shape in the center of the page. Add a long thin oval shaped in the middle of this shape that extends down past the front of the teardrop to create the front of the race car. Add the back wheels with two rectangle shapes coming from the upper left and right side of the race car design. Add the front wheels with two rectangles that are slightly smaller than the back wheels. Place these at the bottom left and right side of the car.

  2. Step 2

Add a rectangle in between the back wheels. This will act as the spoilers. Add a sideways "L" shape to the front right side of the nose. Reverse this shape and add this to the left side as well. Create the shocks and supports for the wheels with 4 diagonal lines coming off of the center inside of the wheel and attaching to the body of the race car.

  3. Step 3

Draw the drivers seat with a rectangular shape in the center of the race car that comes to a round point at the front. Add a circle to the back of this shape for the helmet of the driver. Add the arms with two curved lines below the helmet. Add a small teardrop shape just behind the back of the driver.

  4. Step 4

Erase any lines that overlap. Ink the entire design of the race car. Let the ink dry for 5 minutes and carefully erase the pencil lines.

  5. Step 5

Color the design of the race care using art markers. Color the wheels black and the helmet of the driver dark gray. Color the front left and right sides of the race care blue. Add red to the middle of the nose of the race car. Add blue to the bottom left and right sides of the main tear drop shape. Add red to the upper left and right side of the race tear drop shape. Make the spoiler alternate between blue and red the same way as the front of the race car. Add red to the bottom half of the small teardrop shape behind the driver. Add blue to the tip of this shape.

  6. Step 6

Let the art markers dry and highlight the design with colored pencils. Add highlights of pink to the middle of the red areas. Add light blue to the middle of the blue areas. Create shadows with a dark gray colored pencil near the back of the race car and around the the sides of the body.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can make a photocopy of the design in stage 4 so that you can dry out different paint schemes.
  • Be sure to let the marker dry before adding highlights with the colored pencil or the design will tear.
