Brushing your hair is a very important part of the overall grooming process. Brushing your hair helps distribute the oils in your hair properly, and can even prevent split ends. The problem is, with so many different types of hairbrush, it is difficult to know which is the best kind to purchase. Hairbrushes vary based on the style of hair that you have.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a flat, paddle hair brush for standard usage. Everyday brushing of straight or curly hair is best done with a standard, flat paddle brush. This is the most common type of hair brush and generally a safe bet.

  2. Step 2

Buy a pick if you have curly hair. Picks allow you to easily separate each of the curls when treating your hair and will prevent damage. Picks are also good if you are trying to add volume to hairstyles, like an Afro.

  3. Step 3

Select a round brush if you are trying to add body to your hair. Use this type of brush during blow drying, and it will add extra bounce to your hairstyle. Medium bristles are generally preferred for this style of brush, but choose the level that you like best.

  4. Step 4

Ask your salon, or your hairstylist, for a recommendation. Many hair stylists use products that can be purchased in stores. Beauty supply shops, and catalogs, will also provide you with more options. It's important to try out different brushes, and find the one that works best for you.

  5. Step 5

Buy a brush with round plastic balls at the end of the bristles. This is a fairly common feature on most brushes, and actually protects your hair. It prevents the bristles of the brush from tearing at your hair and causing split ends. They also serve as a barrier between the bristles and your scalp, saving you from scratches.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have a variety of hair brushes on hand. Different brushes are appropriate for different occasions, depending on what you are styling your hair to look like. Try a variety of hair brush companies. Some companies produce higher-quality products than others.
