How to Make Drapery Swags

Drapery swags are one of the easiest window treatments to make and hang, as there is so much room for placement creativity. Drapery swags are generally made of a material that will flow and hang well and can be draped from either a bar or hooks. Although drapery swags can be purchased wherever window treatments are sold, they are simple enough to make that even a novice sewer can complete the project easily. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the length you want your swag to be by using a long piece of string. Using the pole or hooks where the finished product will hang, loop or drape the string as you would the swag. Adjust length and hanging depth as necessary based on aesthetic appeal. Remove the string and measure it to determine the length of the material you will need.

    • 2

To determine the width of the material you will need, measure from the pole (or hooks) to the furthest point the loops or valance of the swag will hang. Add 6 inches to this measurement for the overall material width.

    • 3

Choose a material that will drape and flow well and is resistant to fraying when cut. Avoid stiff materials such as denim or heavy brocade. It is also a good idea to choose a material that looks similar on both sides to achieve uniformity when looping or draping.

    • 4

Cut the material to the predetermined width and length. Fold the outer edge in 1/4 inch all the way around the perimeter and iron (using medium, dry heat) to keep it in place. Fold the edge in again another 1/2 inch and iron again for a smooth edge.

    • 5

Using a straight stitch on your sewing machine, sew an even seam 1/4 inch from the edge all the way around the material. Clip off any loose threads.

    • 6

Hang or loop or tie the swag depending on your own taste. Get creative by combining two swags in contrasting colors or types of material.
