1
Unplug and lay the vacuum cleaner on its back, if it is an upright. Unscrew the panel underneath it. Remove this panel so you can see inside the vacuum cleaner. You should see a round brush, the agitator brush, with a strap wrapped around it. This is the drive belt.
-
2
Remove the drive belt and take out the agitator brush. If the drive belt looks cracked or broken, pull it out as well. It will have to be unwound from the inside of the vacuum before it can be completely removed.
-
-
3
Clip any debris free of the agitator brush using sharp scissors. This can keep the brush from turning and will cause the vacuum to stop sucking up dirt.
-
4
Buy a new drive belt if one is necessary. Refer to the vacuum cleaner's instructions for the proper method of winding it back inside the vacuum. Slip it over the agitator brush and reinsert the agitator brush into the vacuum.
-
5
Open up the canister, if your vacuum is a canister vacuum, and clean inside it. Remove any debris that could be blocking air flow, and change/empty the filter if it has one.
-
6
Remove the hose from the vacuum and use a broom handle to push debris out of it. Run water through it and allow it to air dry for several hours if it is extremely clogged.
-
7
Reassemble the vacuum and test it out. If it still leaves dirt behind or won't work at all, call a repairman to fix it or buy a new vacuum.
