How to Use an SRT File

SRT files are generally used as subtitle files for digital movies. An SRT file does not contain any actual video data. Instead, it is a set of text along with instructions as to when the text should be displayed with the video file. SRT files can be used for DVD, DIvX and other types of digital video. Often, they are named according to the movie they go with as well as their language.

  1. How to Use an SRT File

    • 1

Download an SRT file compatible video player. BSplayer, for example, has a free download (see link in Resources).

    • 2

Setup the SRT file. It will be easier for your media player to locate and use the SRT file if it is in the same folder as the video file and if it has the same name as the video file. To do this, open the folder with the SRT file, highlight the file and then press "CTRL" and "X " to cut it. Then, go to the folder that the video file is in and press "CTRL" and "V." Finally, highlight the moved SRT file, right-click on it, and select "Rename." Then, rename it so it has the same name as the video file.

    • 3

Open your video player. You can do this by double-clicking on the shortcut from the desktop, or by opening it from the Start menu (in the bottom left corner of the screen).

    • 4

Load your video file. To do this, go to the "File" menu and then select "Open." Then, from the menu that appears, select your video file.

    • 5

Import your SRT file. Go to the "Import" menu and select "Subtitles." Then, in the next menu, select your renamed SRT file.
