Build a CD Duplicator Tower

A CD duplicator tower is a device used to make a number of copies of the same CD at the same time. This is a process that would normally take hours with a regular computer but takes moments with a duplicator tower. Normally these devices are purchased in stores and plug directly into a computer you already have. However, by using a spare old computer you have lying around and by buying just a few additional parts, you can build your own CD duplicator tower.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a cheap, older computer. This can be one that you've since replaced with a new model and have no use for or one that you buy at a garage sale. The only things it needs to have are a motherboard, hard drive and expansion bays for adding CD drives to.

    • 2

Buy a CD-ROM drive and as many CD-RW drives as you can fit inside the computer's case. Connect these devices to the case by opening it up, sliding the drives into the expansion bays and taking the unused ribbon cables connected to the motherboard and plugging said cables into the backs of each of the drives. Screw the drives into place so that they don't slide around during the burning process.

Purchase and install Nero. Nero is a computer program made for burning multiple types of blank media, including CDs. Nero is notable in this case for its ability to burn to multiple drives at the same time. You can purchase Nero in an electronics store (Best Buy) or on the program's website.

Place the CD you want to copy in the CD-ROM drive and fill the CD-RW drives with blank CDs. Once this is done, open up Nero. Part of the installation process is putting a Nero icon on your desktop, so simply find the icon and double-click it.

Tell Nero you want to make a CD copy. When the program boots up, a Wizard appears, which is a simplified version of the program giving you quick access to the most basic options. Click the button that says "CD Copy." Nero will read all of your drives and realize that one contains a disc with data and the rest are filled with blank CDs. Click the "Write" button, and Nero will duplicate your CD on each of the CD-RW drives.
