How to Rent or Sell a Timeshare

If you own a timeshare and aren't going to use it this year, consider renting it out or selling your timeshare instead of letting the week or weeks you own expire. Not only can you benefit by receiving income for the week, it's also possible to earn a profit if that week is in high demand or in a high-demand location. The most economical way to rent or sell your timeshare week is to post it on timeshare rental web sites and list it in local newspapers.

Instructions

  1. Here's how to rent or sell your timeshare

    • 1

Check if you are legally able to rent out/sell your timeshare week. Most timeshare properties will let you do this but it's always better to check first.

    • 2

Find out exactly what week(s) you are able to sell. For example, do you own one particular week during August or do you own a season, June through July? Is your week from Saturday to Saturday or Sunday to Sunday?

    • 3

Research how much you can sell your timeshare week for by perusing web sites such as redweek.com, myresortnetwork.com, ebay.com or local newspapers where your timeshare is located.

    • 4

Write the ad. Include details on how many people the timeshare sleeps, what the timeshare resort amenities are, what rules and regulations the buyers will need to follow while there, how to get payment to you and what the penalties are if they cancel.

    • 5

Post the ad on several different web sites, including the ones listed above. Check your spelling and include pictures in the listing as well as your contact information.

Tips & Warnings

  • Respond to inquiries immediately. Most people want an answer right away.

  • It is important to have a sell/rental agreement in place. Most sites that let you list your timeshare for sale have a standard template you can download and customize for your use.
