How to Train a Bus Driver
Bus drivers transport passengers from one place to another. They help reduce air pollution, decrease road congestion and assist those who cannot use cars to get places. Drivers make sure that transit fares are collected and also see that passengers get to the destination safely. Training a bus driver should be done as thoroughly as possible in order to meet these goals.

1
Make sure the driver knows all procedures before starting the bus. Any potential bus driver should be familiar with all road signs as well as procedures used by each bus company.
-
2
Have the driver practice using all controls before he starts the bus. The driver should pay close attention to the placement of all mirrors as well as other indicators such as fuel gauges before starting the engine.
-
-
3
Practice stopping. The bus driver should understand how to stop the bus quickly. Place cones in a parking lot to check how fast he can stop.
-
4
Practice parallel parking. Even if a bus has a designated depot there may be an emergency. In this case he may have to stop the bus and perhaps park it in a small space. Place cones on the ground to test this facility.
-
5
Have the driver sit right next to an already-trained employee. Let the driver observe him for at least a day. The trainee should be required to write up a short report about what he has learned.
-
6
Let the new driver take the wheel at a time when there will be fewer passengers such as midday or late evening. Let him do this for several days. This will allow him work on his skills without the pressure of an entire bus full of people looking over his shoulder. A manager should accompany the driver during this time frame.
