Heat Seal Grosgrain Ribbon

Grosgrain ribbon is a tightly woven, ridged ribbon. It is often used in making bows, wrapping packages and as an accent on children's clothing. If you are using grosgrain ribbon, you need to know how to seal it so it won't fray. An unsealed end can unravel a lot of ribbon very quickly. When it comes to sealing ribbon ends, you have a few options.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Cut the ribbon ends to the desired shape, either angled or V-shaped. For V-shaped, fold the ribbon in half and cut up at an angle from the folded center to the outside edge.

  2. Step 2

Light a candle. Hold the ribbon steadily in front of the flame just outside the reach of it. Do not let it touch the flame or it will turn the ends of your ribbon black. Make sure the ribbon end stays stiff; you don't want it to flop into the flame.

  3. Step 3

Quickly run the ribbon edge along the side of the flame to seal it. For V-shaped ends, keep the ribbon folded and seal one side, then turn it over to seal the other side. Now you can use your heat-sealed ribbon in your crafts and you don't have to worry about the ends fraying.
