Determine what kind of devices are compatible with the device. The shape of the memory stick will determine what it can be used with. Nearly all memory sticks are compatible with computers, but some are further optimized for use in game consoles, cameras and other electronic storage devices.

2
Decide where you are going to use the memory stick. Most can be used simultaneously in different devices, even after formatting. A memory card that you use in an MP3 player can also be used in a computer, but cannot be used with a camera. Find out which devices you own are cross compatible, and which ones you will be using with the memory stick.

A window will pop up on the device's screen saying that a new memory stick has been detected. It will then ask if you want to format it. Click "OK." If you are using a PC, you may need to go to the "My Computer" area and then select the stick from the menu.
