How to Find Free Winter Coats for Kids
Every year many families are hard-pressed to afford winter coats for their children. Even a $25 coat at Walmart can seem out of reach when trying to not only feed children but keep them clothed and protected in proper outerwear. There is hope. There are many charities and places to turn that will provide free winter coats for kids. Many of the coats available for free are like new; some are even donated new so that your children will not be wearing last decade's styles and their dignity will be preserved.

1
Check the Internet. Craigslist and freecycle are great places to look for free winter coats. Craigslist has a "free" category in a town or city near you. Often, kids coats are listed here. Freecycle groups, through Yahoo, give daily updates of free items, and you can post a "needed" (most moderators won't allow the word "wanted" in the subject line) item as well. Coats-for-kids is also a wonderful online charity that provides coat to kids all over the country.

Approach area churches. Many churches have clothing "stores" that provide free coats to children. If this isn't advertised in your local paper, call one of the larger churches in your area. If they don't offer such services, they will be able to direct you to a church that does.

Call your local Shriner's Club. Shriners are notorious for providing everything from free clothing to eyeglasses to children at no charge.

Check with the United Way. United Way sponsors a plethora of charities, and someone there will be able to steer you in the right direction, for example, the Salvation Army. Once a year the Salvation Army usually gives away free coats to families in need.
