How to Comb Relaxed Hair

Comb Relaxed Hair

The relaxation process is extremely popular among people of African descent, due to the thick, curly nature of the hair. The process involves applying a strong chemical cream to the hair and smoothing it down, then rinsing out the cream a few minutes later. This removes the curls from the hair, making it much easier to comb and less likely to tangle. However, relaxed hair can be very fragile and easy to break, particularly if it isn't taken care of properly. This article will help you to do the most basic of tasks: to comb your relaxed hair. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Wide-toothed comb (the wider the better)
  • Fine-toothed comb

Instructions

    • 1

Take your hair down if it was put up. Gently use your fingers to untangle any major snarls. In order to do this properly, start at the ends of your hair and work your way up to the crown.

    • 2

Take the wide-toothed comb and carefully use it in the same manner--start from the ends and work your way up.

    • 3

Repeat the process one more time with a fine-toothed comb. When you've completed this process, your hair will be tangle free. You will also note that a minimum of hair will be left in each comb. This is normal; you needn't worry unless you notice a lot of hair coming out at a time. If this happens, you probably need to be gentler with your hair.

Prepare your hair for bed. To do this, comb again thoroughly (this time using either of the two combs) and pull your hair into a bun, or braid into two large braids. Tie a large scarf over your hair. This avoids the additional tangles that would be brought about by having your hair loose throughout the night.

Brush your hair normally and style it in the morning. Add oil, if necessary, to the ends of your hair if it is dry (see Tips for scalp use),

Tips & Warnings

  • If your scalp happens to be naturally dry, use a leave-in conditioner or even an oil like Shea butter or cocoa butter on your scalp. To do this, simply part off the hair in 1-inch sections and apply it to the scalp, then brush thoroughly.

  • Note that the process of relaxing your hair can lead to severe chemical burns if done incorrectly. If using this method at home, please make sure to read the directions carefully. Do not get relaxer near mucous membranes. Remember, these chemicals are in the same family as hair removers.
