A RAR file is a form of data compression. There are several types of file compression, including zip and ace. These use a program or application to compress information and make files smaller. This is useful if you have limited hard-drive space or are transferring information to another PC or through the Internet. Before you can run or view the application, you will need to unzip the file to your hard drive. RAR compression requires a specific program to unzip in Vista.
