A military funeral is an occasion for Class A uniforms.

The U.S. Army carries with it a level of prestige signifying in its mission to defend our nation. Part of this prestige is reflected in the wearing of the Class A uniform. The Class A is to be worn during moments of service and respect, such as a retirement ceremonies, change of command or a military funeral. Because it holds a place of high importance and symbolism, the Army Class A uniform must always be worn as close to perfectly as possible.

  • Class A Uniform and all accoutrements
  • Proper shoes
  • Tape measure
  • Small ruler no more than 6 inches long

      Make sure the general appearance of all uniform requirements is exemplary. This means that there can be no rips, tears, loose strings, errant markings, scratches or missing parts in the uniform, accoutrements or shoes. Polish shoes and metal or brass to a shine. Press the uniform until it is wrinkle free.

      Ensure all clothing is sized correctly. For men and women wearing the Class A uniform, sleeves must extend 1 inch below the bottom of the wrist. For women wearing the skirt, it must be between 1 inch above or 2 inches below the center of the knee. Ties cannot be more than than 2 inches above the belt or longer than the bottom of the belt buckle.

      Place insignias, name plates and rank at their appropriate locations and distances. Ranks for all non-commissioned officers are sewn onto the jacket and centered between the shoulder seam and elbow of the sleeve. Center service stripes on the left sleeve at the bottom half; place stripes at a 45-degree angle with the low end pointing to the inside of the seam. Wear name plates above the right breast pocket for males; for females, place them 1 to 2 inches above the top button and centered to the right side. Wear ribbons in order of precedence and centered 1/8 of an inch above the right breast pocket flap for men, and ½ inch above the name plate for women.

      Do a final check for alignment and wear, using a partner and a mirror. Put on all the parts of your uniform and ask your partner to use the tape measure and small ruler to ensure all measurements are accurate, because they can change once the uniform is on you.
