3-D modeling is used in many industries, from television and movies to advertising and games. Usually, 3D modeling programs cost a great deal and have a steep learning curve. Google SketchUp is a freeware 3-D modeling program that is fairly easy to learn and use. One rather useful skill to have in SketchUp is knowing how to create a spiral.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open SketchUp. Go to the Tool panel, and select the Circle tool.

  2. Step 2

Draw a circle on the ground that is the overall diameter you want your spiral to be.

  3. Step 3

Select the Line tool (the pencil) and use it to draw through the center point to the other side, dividing the spiral into sections across its diameter. The number of sections you need will depend on how many treads you need and how high you want the spiral to be.

  4. Step 4

Select one of the sections, and use the Push/Pull tool to raise it. For this example, we will say you want to raise it 6 inches. You can get this number exact by typing it in after you click the section with the Push/Pull tool.

  5. Step 5

Select each of the following sections in turn, and repeat Step 4, except that each section should be 6 inches higher than the one before it. And there you have it: a spiral made in SketchUp.
