How to Steam Foods Without a Steamer

Just because you don't have a traditional steamer does not mean that you can't enjoy fresh steamed food. Many things in your kitchen can be used to create a steamer that will provide you with perfectly steamed food every time. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Large pot with lid
  • Coffee mug
  • Medium sized plate or saucer

Instructions

      Fill the large pot with 2 or 3 cups of water. Place it on the stove top.

      Insert a coffee mug into the pot of water, make sure it is centered. Then fill the coffee mug half way with water.

      Place the plate centered on top of the coffee mug.

      Add the food to the plate and season it (optional).

      Turn the stove burner on high and bring the water to a boil. Once the water has reached a boil, place the lid on top of the pot.

      Steam food until it is done. For most veggies steaming only takes five to seven minutes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Steam will be hot. Be careful not burn yourself when lifting the lid off of the pot.
