How to Change a CPU Clock Speed on a Dell Computer

To gain added performance from your Dell computer you may wish to change the clock speed of the CPU. This process is known as overclocking. Overclocking allows you to take advantage of the CPUs tolerance or "headroom" to operate at a higher frequency than the default factory setting. Raising the CPU clock speed can noticeably improve the performance of your system.

Instructions

  1. How to Change a CPU Clock Speed on a Dell Computer

    • 1

When the computer is booting up press and hold the "Delete" key. You should do this after you hear the self check beep from your computer. Holding the delete key will open the CMOS setup panel. CMOS setup contains menus that allow access to advanced system features and settings.

    • 2

From within CMOS setup select "Advanced Settings." This will open the settings menu. From here, select "CPU". Notice the current clock speed it will be stated in megahertz (for example: 2,830MHz.) Using the arrow keys on your computer keyboard, navigate the cursor so that it is positioned on (highlighting) the CPU speed number.

    • 3

Increase the CPU speed in 5 to 10 MHz increments. After each increase, exit CMOS settings and save your settings by pressing the "Exit And Save" key (F10). Your Dell computer will automatically restart on exit.

    • 4

Notice how your system runs after each increase. Open and exit a few programs. Attempt to do some multi-tasking, such as web browsing and word processing or other activities. If the operating system still appears to be stable and does not crash or freeze, reboot your computer and re-enter CMOS setup and increase your CPU speed by another 5 to 10 MHZ. Repeat the process until your operating system starts to hang, freeze or show other instability. Then open CMOS settings and decrease CPU speed to the last setting at which your Dell computer was stable.

Tips & Warnings

  • While giving an added speed boost, overclocking your CPU too aggressively can lead to system instability.

  • Do not attempt to overclock your Dell computer unless you have a comprehensive knowledge of computer systems and architecture.

  • Overclocking your CPU causes increased heat build up which will shorten the life of the CPU and motherboard.

  • Damage caused from overclocking will not be covered by your warranty.
