How to Unzip Files on a Mac
Files formatted in the ZIP file extension give users the ability to compress, archive and extract file contents. Compression gives you the ability to save storage space on your hard drive, which in turn makes transferring or emailing the file more feasible. ZIP files allow you to extract individual contents from the folder, rather than opening the entire folder. Unzipping these files for viewing and operation purposes can be done on any type of computer, including Mac computers.

Download the jZIP file extraction software.

Install the program to your computer's hard drive. Once the jZip set component is done downloading, click on the "Open" command to begin the initial installation of the actual program.

Access the program in order to load the ZIP file you wish to extract. Upon completion of the installation process, a jZip icon should be displayed on your computer's desktop screen. Click on the jZip icon on your computer's desktop. Click on the "File" tab and select the "Open" option. A Mac portal window will appear, displaying your hard drive's files, programs and other content. Locate your ZIP file and click click on the "Open" button.

Select the "Extract" option on the jZip navigation menu, which will be at the top of the program's window. Once you select the Extract command, the ZIP file's components will automatically begin to unzip. You will be able to view and access the file's internal folders, files and components.

Tips & Warnings
You do not have to unzip the file each time you access it. Once the jZip icon thumbnail is present next to the file's folder, it is automatically accessible. The program will always assist you in accessing the file.
You must have zip file extracting software, such as Winzip, to open any zip file. You will be unable to open any zip file without proper software to perform the operation.
