Sushi rice begins with a cooking process and then ingredients are added to turn the cooked rice into sushi rice. It's an easy process, especially if you already have a rice cooker. It takes about 45 minutes to get your rice ready to use in sushi.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 or 4 cups of short-grained Asian-style rice
  • Water to measure
  • ½ cup of rice vinegar
  • 4 tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • Wooden rice paddle
  1. Step 1

Rinse rice in water several times until the water is clear.

  2. Step 2

Remove the cooking bowl from the rice cooker and put the rinsed rice in the bowl.

  3. Step 3

Run water over the rice. There is enough water when the tip of your finger is placed on top of the rice, and the water reaches your first knuckle.

  4. Step 4

Put the bowl back in the cooker and press the button to begin cooking. Rice will be done in about half an hour.

  5. Step 5

Allow the rice to steam for an extra 5 minutes. Mix vinegar, sugar and salt together and pour over the rice. Use a wooden rice paddle to combine the flavors. This is sushi rice, and it is the essential ingredient in preparing many Japanese sushi delicacies.
