Windows Live Mail now offers POP3 support.

Microsoft now offers POP3 support for Hotmail and Windows Live Mail. This means you can access your Web-based email using your own client, such as Mozilla Thunderbird. Configuring Thunderbird to automatically log in to your Live Mail account and download your messages can be a bit challenging, but if you follow some basic procedures, you can be up and running in just a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Mozilla Thunderbird (installed)

Instructions

    • 1

Open Thunderbird. The Account Wizard will launch automatically if you are running the application for the first time. If it doesn't, click “Tools” on the menu bar, select “Account Settings” and then click the “Add Account” button. Select “Email Account” and click the “Next” button.

    • 2

Type your name and complete Hotmail or Windows Live Mail address in the input fields. Click “Next.”

    • 3

Select “POP.” In the Incoming Server field, type “pop3.live.com” (without the quotes). In the Outgoing Server field, type “smtp.live.com” (again, no quotes). Click “Next.”

    • 4

Enter your full email address in both the “Incoming User Name” field and the “Outgoing User Name” field. These entries will be the same. Be sure that you enter your complete address, including the “@hotmail.com” or “@live.com” suffix. Click “Next.”

    • 5

Type something in the “Account Name” field that will help you distinguish this particular account from any other that you might set up later. Click “Next.” Review the verification screen that appears and click “Finish.”

    • 6

Click “Tools” on the menu bar and then click “Account Settings.”

    • 7

Click “Server Settings” on the left side of the Account Settings pane. Under the Security Settings, select “SSL.” Make sure the “Use Secure Authentication” box is NOT checked and that the Port field is set to “995.” Click the “OK” button.

    • 8

Click the “Get Mail” button. Thunderbird will prompt you for your password. Type it in, and optionally, tick the “Use Password Manager” box to store the password so you don't have to re-enter it every time Thunderbird checks for mail. Click the “OK” button and get your email!

Tips & Warnings

  • This guide is for both Hotmail and Live mail accounts. If you are using another client, make sure that your POP server is set to port 995 and your SMTP server is set for port 25 (or 587).
