I've had great feedback on the recent LinkedIn articles that I have posted and I am addressing some of the questions that have been asked. How do you ask for a recommendation?

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Access to the internet
  • www.linkedin.com
  1. Step 1

Log on to: www.linkedin.com (I am assuming that you have created a profile).

  2. Step 2

On the menu on the left under "Profile", go to "Recommendations". You'll end up in the Recommendations screen with three tabs at the top (Received, Sent and Request).

  3. Step 3

Go to the third tab on the top: "Request Recommendations". Your first step will ask you what "particular job/education" (this is taken from your profile)do you want to be recommended for.

  4. Step 4

Step 2 will ask you to search the contacts that you have already connected to so that you may invite them to endorse you. You must be connected to these people in order to get a reference.

  5. Step 5

Step 3 will ask you to create a message. There is already a template created by LinkedIn but you are welcome to personalize it to target the person that you are asking to "Recommend" you.

  6. Step 6

Click "Send" and just wait for people to endorse you. You will be notified via email and on the email on your profile that you have been recommended. You will need to review the recommendation and decide if you want to make it visible or not. You will also have the option to go back to the person that recommended you and ask for a revision.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that you have a good relationship with the person that you are asking to "endorse" you.
  • If you'd like people to do this on their own, give them a recommendation first and hope that they give one back. Please note that they are not required to give you one!!
  • You do not have to accept the recommendations that you receive.
